Holy Trinity Church Stocks
Outside Holy Trinity Church on Micklegate there are some wooden stocks in the graveyard, and there have been stocks here since at least the sixteenth century. They were used as a public punishment until outlawed in the mid nineteenth century, and there would have once been several across the city.
The present stocks are replicas, but the originally are displayed inside the church, notable for having five holes. There have been various stories about why they have five and not six holes, but the most likely is that they were just cut down to size due to damage.
