Alfred Metcalfe – York War Dead

Alfred Metcalfe was born in 1898, the son of Alfred and Alice M Metcalfe. Alfred senior had been born in York in 1861, the son of William Metcalfe and Hannah Nalton, and he became a draper’s assistant and machinist.

Alfred senior married Alice in 1887, and they went on to live at 222, Salisbury Terrace in York.

Alfred was the younger brother of Florence, Ethel and Alice and he had a younger sister, Annie.

Alfred joined the 9th battalion of the West Yorkshire Regiment, service number 10451.

He died fighting in the First World War on 22nd August 1915 at the age of 18. His memorial is at Helles Memorial in Turkey and also on the Leeman Road War Memorial.
