There have been many characters in York’s history. One of the city’s first historians was Francis Drake who wrote Eboracum, which was partly illustrated by Francis Place. MPs include George Denison Faber, Hamar Greenwood, Sir Frederick Milner and John George Butcher. John Carr was a Georgian architect who designed a number of the city’s buildings.
Two of the city’s best known nineteenth century characters were both closely involved with the development of the railways in York, George Leeman and George Hudson.
There is also a series on the men of York who went to fight in World War One, including Ernest Allenby, George Atkinson, Bertie Blanshard, John Edwin Carrall, Stanley Dutton and Joseph Burgess Hall.
